Thunderball
The Thunderball draw
The Thunderball draw was launched on 12th June 1999. In the early days, players had to pick five main numbers between 1 and 34, plus one additional number known as the Thunderball which was between 1 and 14. The entry fee to the Thunderball draw is £1 per board.
During its inception, this game was held once a week on Saturdays only, but due to its popularity and to allow more variation in the public draws, players can now enter their numbers twice a week on Wednesdays and Saturdays during the televised draw exclusively shown on BBC One.
The initial payouts were organised into 2 types; matching the numbers and matching the numbers with the Thunderball. You were able to win a prize for matching 3- 5 numbers alone, or matching 1-5 numbers with the Thunderball.
For matching as little as two numbers, you would win £5 from your £1 entry which carried positive odds of 1 in 33.
From May 2010, the Thunderball draw received an update. The five numbers that were picked by the player were increased by 5 from 34 to 39. Although this increased the odds, the main jackpot for matching all 5 numbers and the Thunderball was DOUBLED to a massive £500,000. The minimum prize was also lowered to Matching only the Thunderball for £3 which carries a 1 in 14 chance.
Hotpicks
Hotpicks?
The Hotpicks draw is made using the main lottery draw for its numbers, but for a completely different game with its own entry fee and prizes.
Each player must choose both the numbers and the number of draw balls they want to match up to a maximum number of 5 balls. The rules of this game are that they player must match all the balls they choose.
The Lotto Hotpicks is often described as 5 games in 1 because the game presents 5 different ways to play each with different odds and prize winnings. Just like the Thunderball game, Lotto hotpicks is £1 per board to enter.
Lotto Hotpicks provides the best incentive for winners who do not match many balls when they play, as the player has the opportunity for win large amounts for matching fewer balls. Each player has a 1 in 9 chance of matching 1 number with a £5 payout. The full payouts are;
1 number £5
2 numbers £40
3 numbers £450
4 numbers £7,000
5 numbers £130,000
History
The UK National Lottery History
What is it?
The largest Lottery in the United Kingdom is the known to all as the National Lottery. It has been continually operated and controlled by the Camelot group since its creation in 1994. Since then, its licence has been granted in 2001 and again in 2007. In the UK, the National Lottery is regulated by the National Lottery Commission.
To this date, the National Lottery is one of, if not the most popular and most widely participated in form of gambling in the UK.
Tax Free
The National Lottery games are especially preferred by many of its millions of players every week as a result of the tax free prizes that are all paid in lump sums.
All players must be over 16 to be eligible to play and win, retailers allow foreign players as long as their ticket was purchased in the UK. Although online purchaser of tickets must have a UK residential address and a UK bank account, the members of Syndicates can be of any nationality.
Big Lottery Fund
The Big Lottery Fund
The Big Lottery Fund is an exempt charity that was created by the government to administer the funding of good causes in line with the creation of the National Lottery. It was the product of a merger between the National Lottery Charities Board and the New Opportunities Fund in June 2004. Its official launch however coincided with the National Lottery act 2006.
The purpose of the fund is to provide grants from its annual expenditure of £630 million. However, in recent times there has been criticism over the chosen expenditure towards more ministerial targets over genuine good causes as the main focus.
The Big Lottery Fund, also known as BIG makes up its £630 million from the weekly lottery draws, and the numerous other National Lottery games that make up the Nation Lottery Collection. Due to the fact that it is the beneficiary of almost half the total amount raised, it is an important aspect of the National Lottery. The BIG budget makes it the largest of all National Lottery funders.
The main aim of BIG is to support various projects that will bring aid to those in need in local communities. The Act of 2006 specifically was geared to promote more interaction and direct aid to the communities by allowing for increased public involvement in the Lottery. Public views which are thought to be paramount, were to be made part of the decision making process during fund distribution.
